Vampire hair treatment to regrow scalp hair
Vampire treatment or the Dracula hair treatment is, ‘just a fancy new name for the age old PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) treatment done for wound healing and ulcers. Since PRP is derived from patient’s own blood and also due to celebrity usage, the name has been in fashion,’ say dermatologist Dr Apratim Goel.
Blood has powerful growth factors to regrow hair.
In this apparently simple procedure, around 10-15 ml of a patient’s t blood is drawn and processed in a centrifuge machine for about 8 to 10 minutes. A fragment of this solution is then pipetted and after adding a few cell therapy treatments, it is injected into the scalp or the hair loss area with the help of micro-needles, explains cosmetologist Dr Rashmi Shetty.
According to Cosmetologist Dr Jamuna Pai, ‘PRP is extremely popular and I have been a witness to that in international and national conferences. I am talking about this only because I believe in it and my clients give me positive feedback.’ She adds, ‘Results can be seen after at least two sessions of the treatment that is taken in a three-week gap.’
Dr Poonam Wadhwani, cosmetic dermatologist says that compared to stem cell therapy wherein new adult and healthy stem cells are introduced into the damaged cells which are found in the hair follicle, vampire hair treatment or PRP is more popular because, ‘This is a simpler, more effective technology. It is quick and the patient can be back at work the same day because other than the slight pain of the injection and mild itching, there are usually no other effects.’
Dr Goel says that this is a safe treatment as the patients own blood is used. ‘The solution that is injected is rich in platelets. These platelets secrete a variety of growth factors that once injected into scalp, help in activating dormant hair follicles and also new hair follicles.’
Worth a try – for those who have a balding scalp!
