Sunlight reduces risk of diabetes by 50 percent
The simple answer to prevent diabetes may be in a commodity that is freely available – Sunlight.
Lack of sun exposure, having foods containing low Vitamin D or having a darkly-pigmented skin may lead to low Vitamin D levels.
Having adequate Vitamin D levels during young adulthood may reduce the risk of adult-onset (type 1) diabetes by 50 %.
This was revealed by a study done at Harvard School of Public Health.
If this study is confirmed, it could lead to a role of Vitamin D supplementation in preventing diabetes in adults.
Vitamin D levels in Indians are deficient and that may be the reason why Indians are at a higher risk of this disease.
Individuals who wear too much clothing to protect themselves from sun exposure, have diets low in Vitamin D or have darkly-pigmented skin are more likely to have low Vitamin D levels.
