Regtect: new drug to treat alcoholism
Regtect (or chemically Acamprosate calcium) is the new drug launched in Japan raising hopes to treat people addicted to alcohol.
Alcohol dependence is a mental disease that renders sufferers to unable to control their drinking habits. Any attempt to de-addict an alcoholic using abstinence technique causes withdrawal symptoms, namely, shakiness, sweating, disturbed sleep patterns, hallucinations (auditory and visual), etc.
Regtect helps by improving the chemical balance in the brain to suppress craving for alcohol. Drugs currently in use discourage drinking by causing unpleasant symptoms (palpitations, headaches, nausea).
Do not self-medicate. This drug requires close supervision of a physician.
