Pears for fiber
Pears are a mild, sweet fruit having a fibrous pulp.
They are fat-free, cholesterol-free fruit rich in important antioxidants, flavonoids and dietary fiber.
A pear on an average provides 6 grams of fiber (around 24% of daily requirement) and just 100 calories.
Pears may help reduce weight as also reduce the risk of developing cancer, hypertension, diabetes and heart disease.
There are many studies that have suggested that increasing consumption of plant foods like pears decreases the risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease and overall mortality while promoting a healthy complexion, increased energy, and overall lower weight.
The Food and Nutrition Board of the National Institute of Medicine developed an AI (Adequate Intake) guideline for fiber in 2001, as follows:
- Men under age of 50 years should consume 38 grams of fiber per day
- Women under the age of 50 should consume 25 grams of fiber per day
- Men above 50 the fiber intake should be 30 grams per day
- Women above 50 the recommended fiber intake is 21 grams per day
Most people are not getting even 50% of their daily recommendation.
Why is fiber so important? The National Institute of Medicine found that diets with 14 grams fiber for every 1000 calories were associated with significant reductions in the risk of both coronary heart disease and type-2 diabetes.
The easiest way to increase fiber intake is to increase your consumption of fruits and vegetables!
