India: 2 lakh women with breast cancer by 2030
A study conducted by GE Healthcare estimates that by 2030, the number of new cases of breast cancer in women in India will increase from the current 115,000 to 200,000 per year.
The study confirms that breast cancer is the second most common cancer diagnosed in Indian women after cervical cancer.
It is also known that Indian women develop breast cancer roughly a decade earlier than women in western countries.
Poor survival may be explained by lack of or limited access to early detection services and treatment.
Talking on the need for early detection of cancer, Terri Bresenham, President and CEO, GE Healthcare, South Asia said ‘Breast cancer is one of the deadliest diseases a woman has to battle, and in India, the number of breast cancer cases have increased by 10 to 15 % over the last decade. Stage 1 detection increases chances of survival to 80 % as compared to Stage 3 detection where the chances are a mere 20 %. The need of the hour lies in creating awareness on early detection of cancer’.
