How-to recognize colon cancer
Colon cancer, also known as colorectal cancer, is now the second leading cause of cancer deaths among American adults.
The five-year survival rate is 90 percent if treated at anearly stage. When cancer spreads, the survival rate drops significantly. Hence awareness as to when to visit a doctor is important.
Preventing colon cancer: It can be prevented by limiting intake of red meat and alcohol; eating vegetables and fiber; drinking green tea regularly; and taking a pill containing vitamin D.
Have regular screenings if you have a family history of colon cancer or are over the age of 50. If you notice any of the following symptoms contact your doctor:
- A change in your bowel habits, such as diarrhea or constipation, as well as any change in the consistency of your stool
- Bloody stools or rectal bleeding
- Persistent abdominal discomfort, such as gas, pain or cramps
- A feeling that your bowel isn’t completely emptying
- Weakness, fatigue or unexplained weight loss
Do not ignore the symptoms as early diagnosis leads to better prognosis (outcomes) of treatment.
