High fiber diet can stop prostate cancer growth
Diets rich in fiber content can halt prostate cancer growth, reported Cancer Prevention Research journal.
The research findings highlight the ability of inositol hexaphosphate (also known as IP6) to prevent progression of prostate cancer in mice.
Researchers headed by Komal Raina, Ph.D, at University of Colorado Cancer Center said, ‘The study’s result were really rather profound. We saw dramatically reduced tumor volumes, primarily due to anti-angiogenic effects of IP6’.
The researchers gave IP6 to mice, which is found in high-fiber diets and noticed that this prevented new blood vessels from being formed. Without these blood vessels, the tumors were unable to gain the energy needed to grow and progress.
While these findings were found in mice, other studies in humans have also suggested that fiber has anti-cancer powers that must be exploited.
