Gene tests for cancer on the rise in women
Indian women, especially in the state of Kerala are gene testing themselves for BRCA1…and the number of women getting this test done is on the rise.
In 2013, Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie tested positive for BRCA1 – a gene associated with increased risk of breast and ovarian cancer and subsequently performed a mastectomy (breast removal).
Angelina did the test as she had a high risk of developing cancer, but women who are opting for the test in India are those who have already been treated for breast cancer.
This is because they want to know whether breast or ovarian cancer would recur again.

Even though the BRCA test costs around Rs 20,000 to Rs 40,000 young women want to know about the status of the disease and also about the chances of genetic transmission to children.
If at risk of developing cancer, based on BRCA test, then the family members are advised on precautions.
