Diet choices may lead to daytime sleepiness
It is human to feel tired towards the end of the day; however excessive sleepiness may be due to the fatty diet that you take. A fatty diet also can result in poor sleep at night and sleep disorders.
Says Dr. Vikas Agrawal, ENT specialist and sleep apnea surgeon, ‘The exact mechanisms which causes excessive daytime sleepiness after fatty diets is not known. However, it is postulated that diets high in fat content causes an increase in the secretion of a hormone called cholecystokinin, which, in turn, leads to sleepiness.’
Foods rich in fat cause sleepiness, so it is best to not consume fried and oily foods during breakfast and lunch.
Factors affecting sleep:
- Fat rich diet
- Use of mobile phones / watching TV before sleep time at night
- Tight clothing
- Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (a type of sleep disorder)
To avoid daytime sleepiness pay attention to what you eat and get a good night’s sleep.
