Breastfeeding can help prevent gestational diabetes
Scientists have found out a cost-effective way of reducing the risk of developing type-2 diabetes among women with gestational diabetes (a diabetic state during pregnancy) by advising breastfeeding.
Researchers at the Helmholtz Zentrum Munchen in Germany studied the metabolism of women with gestational diabetes after giving birth.
‘We observed that the metabolites in women who had breastfed for more than three months differed significantly from those who had had shorter lactation periods,’ said first-author Daniela Much from the Institute of Diabetes Research.
During pregnancy around the 24th week many women develop gestational diabetes – it doesn’t mean that diabetes was present before pregnancy or that it will continue after childbirth.
Follow instructions of the doctor carefully as diabetes is not good for both mother and the newborn child.
