Bariatric surgery controls blood sugar better than medicines

Type-2 diabetes is generally found in overweight individuals. Many times it is difficult to control blood sugars levels of such individuals.

But a study conducted by Dr Shashank Shah showed that 40 of the 80 patients who underwent bariatric surgery had better diabetes control of diabetes than the other half who were taking medicine. Dr Shah presented the study at the American Diabetes Association (ADA) meeting held in New Orleans.

A statement on ADA website mentions, ‘The study shows that bariatric surgery may be a better treatment option than me dical therapy and lifestyle management alone for obese Asian Indian patients with inadequately controlled type 2 diabetes.’

‘Every eight seconds, an Indian dies of some complications associated with diabetes,’ said Dr Shah during a telephone call from New Orleans.

Diabetes surgery has been a controversial topic in medicine, as it involves drastic cuts and has no long-term results. The present study too only has two-year follow-up. Many endocrinologists have opposed the surgical option.

As for now, bariatric surgery seems to be an option that works in type-2 diabetes to control the blood sugar.
