Arthritis common among young adults
According to Indian Orthopedic Surgeons, almost 50% of Indian population suffers from arthritis in one or more joints.
Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is perhaps the commonest form of arthritis affecting young adults.
Women, especially in their 30s are being diagnosed with arthritis of the knees and fingers as these joints get affected early.
Reasons of getting arthritis at an early age:
- genetic predisposition,
- physical inactivity,
- overweight and obesity,
- joint / ligament injuries,
- childhood disorders that lead to bone mal-alignment causing joint degeneration over time.
How to avoid arthritis:
- Diet should be rich in calcium, protein, vitamin D and C.
- Calcium allows the bone beneath the degenerated surface to resist deforming forces.
- Physical activity at least four times a week is important as it not only helps to keep weight in check and strengthen your muscles but also in slowing down arthritis progression.
Finally, do not delay an appointment with a Rheumatologist or an Orthopedic Surgeon if joint swelling or pain persists.
