Air pollution cuts life expectancy
According to a study done in India, if you are living in Maharashtra chances are you would live 3.3 years lesser while in Delhi this could be 6.4 years.
In 2011, India lost US Dollars 640 billion due to premature deaths from exposure to PM 2.5 which is mainly emitted by vehicles. This is 10 times what it spent on healthcare in the same year.
The study was conducted by the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) scientists in collaboration with the National Centre for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), Colorado.
The study is likely to shake up ignite concern over the need to improve air quality in India.
