Tomatoes prevent breast cancer

According to researchers at Rutgers University, led by Adana Llanos, post-menopausal women increase thier risk of breat cancer further as their BMI (Body Mass Index) increases. Simply stated, women who gain weight after menopause are at increased risk of developing breast cancer.

But a study done by the same researchers suggests that the risk can be reduced by adopting a tomato-rich diet; this was reported in Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.

Results of the study indicated that when the women followed a tomato-rich diet, they showed a 9 % increase in adiponectin levels. Adiponectin is a hormone that plays a part in regulation of fat and blood sugar levels.

Llanos said that their findings also emphasizes the importance of tomato-rich diet for women in obesity prevention, as it increased the adiponectin levels that helped maintain healthy weight.
