Testosterone deficiency: striking early
Blame it on lifestyle factors, Indian men in their early 30’s and 40’s are victims of low Testosterone. Normal levels of testosterone are 400-450, but it is not uncommon to see the ‘complaining’ Indian men having levels around 200.
Testosterone is the male hormone famous for its role in libido (sexual activity). In addition testosterone is responsible for strong heart and bones, muscle mass, sharp cognition and general wellbeing.
Deficiency of testosterone is known to cause irritability, grumpiness, tiredness, disturbed sleep, slow cognition (reasoning) and loss of libido.
In a study conducted in 2009 at Lucknow’s King George Medical College, Testosterone Deficiency Syndrome (TDS) was present in 26.1 % Indian men aged between 40 and 60 years.
Treatment is available but do not self-medicate. Medical supervision is necessary. It is important for the partner to understand that the complaints can be managed; and should not be a cause for marital discord.
In addition, lifestyle changes like proper diet, exercise, sleep, weight control, stress, smoking cessation should be given due attention.
Dr. Prakash Kothari, an eminent sexual health expert in Mumbai, says, he first puts the patient on a diet of urad dal as it is a rich source of plant testosterone, advising them of its consumption three times a week. It’s only when testosterone levels don’t go up, does he prescribe injectables and gels.
