Red meat bad for heart

Two studies published recently show that people who eat red meat, but not vegetarians or people who eat only white meat such as chicken produce more of a chemical called TMAO, which has been shown to raise heart disease risk.

TMAO (trimethylamine N-oxide) is not traced in the body a month after stopping eating red meat.

The research also showed that a diet heavy in red meat can change kidney function, a surprising finding that raises more questions about red meat’s effects on the body.

‘These studies really show what a large impact a diet that is rich in red meat can have on your metabolism,’ said Dr. Stanley Hazen of the Cleveland Clinic, who has been studying the effects of TMAO on heart disease.

TMAO did not increase in people fed poultry and fish, or vegetarian diets.

The non-meat sources of saturated fat also didn’t affect TMAO.

In this study dairy products and eggs were not tested; however, other work has shown that eating eggs and dairy can raise TMAO levels.

Based on this research, it may be good to leave eating red meat completely, instead have poultry and fish!
