Artificial bone marrow developed

Scientists at KIT (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology), Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in Stuttgart and the University of Tubingen have artificially recreated in a lab the basic properties of natural bone marrow, Xinhua reported.

In the artificial bone marrow, the researchers incubated the hematopoietic stem cells freshly obtained from the umbilical cord blood and found that the cells actually proliferated.

This knowledge could help to create a functional artificial stem cell niche to treat leukemia patients in the next 10 to 15 years.
