Cholesterol good, says US health panel
The Dietary Guidelines for Americans now no longer places an upper limit on cholesterol ‘because evidence shows no appreciable relationship between consumption of dietary cholesterol and serum cholesterol’, says the US department of agriculture.
The saturated fats that usually accompanies a cholesterol-rich diet, however has to be consumed with caution.
‘Saturated fat is still a nutrient of concern for overconsumption, particularly for those older than the age of 50 years’.
Saturated fats are solid at room temperature. Some examples:
- fatty beef
- lamb
- pork
- poultry with skin
- beef fat
- lard and cream
- butter
- cheese
- other dairy products made from whole or reduced-fat (2 percent) milk
- palm oil, coconut oil – both of which do not contain cholesterol
Note: The guidelines are not yet official until 24th March 2015, when they will be discussed at a public meeting in Bethesda, Maryland.
