Breast cancer – who is at risk
Out of 10 breast cancers 8 are diagnosed in women over 50 years of age. Also, younger women are no exceptions.
Lifestyle choices like smoking, obesity, lack of exercise and poor diet increase your chances of contracting breast cancer.
‘Though there is no link between the size of your breasts and your chances of developing breast cancer, there is a correlation with your body mass index (BMI),’ says Lester Barr, a consultant breast surgeon and founder of breast cancer prevention charity Genesis. ‘If you are overweight, then breast cancer is much more common, because it is likely that you are not getting enough exercise and have a higher intake of calories. Breast implants also come with an increased risk, as the implants make lumps much harder for you to spot.’
Adopt good lifestyle choices as they seem to be one of the more powerful defense against breast cancer.
