Counter effects of prolonged sitting by fidgeting
Sitting for long periods is nothing but sedentary lifestyle and that is usually the cause of most of the diseases starting up early in life.
A new research suggests that if you have to be sitting for prolonged periods to complete a work, do not sit still. Let movements of the body happen.
Fidgeting is not the same as taking breaks that has been known to have beneficial effects on health.
Fidgeting is having movements of the body while continuing to sit in the same place.
Some ways by which fidgeting can be achieved – check your mobile, solve the Rubik’s cube, sketch, squeeze the stress ball, rub your feet on a roller or an acupuncture mat, etc.
The research found that there was no increased risk of mortality from longer sitting times, compared to more active women, who considered themselves as moderately or very fidgety.
‘Our results support the suggestion that it is best to avoid sitting for long periods of time, and even fidgeting may offer enough of a break to make a difference,’ said Gareth Hagger-Johnson, the co-lead author of the study.
